Based largely on European travel accounts, the myth of the three races was associated with the overall configuration of the paternalist slave society in Brazil, which featured a very large number of slaves who were present in all economic and social activities, including in the domestic environment. The presence of slaves in these activities helped create the idea that the country was a mixed nation in which cordial racial relations existed: “Hybrid since the beginning, of all the [countries in the] Americas, Brazilian society had harmonious racial relations.”20 According to this conception, one could not find racial prejudice or racial hatred in Brazil. The borders between the classes were supposedly not rigidly defined and were not based on skin color.
